The Marlow Bird Park is a bird park in Northern Germany . The park in Marlow is located in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern near the Hanseatic cities of Rostock and Stralsund.

Emergence

The idea for the park was presented to the city fathers of Marlow in 1990. In autumn 1992 the eight hectare site provided by the city was fenced in and the outside area was landscaped. On July 2, 1994, the park opened its doors to visitors. Since 2003, there has been an increasing focus on systems accessible to visitors. Since then, many outdoor facilities have emerged, such as B. The structure and animal population modeled after the National Park Western Pomerania Lagoon Area and named after it.

Species spectrum

In contrast to pure bird parks, the Marlow bird park contains species from almost all bird families as well as representatives of other animal groups. For example, tropical butterflies were shown in the tropical house in the 1990s . The complex is now inhabited by tropical birds, but also by fish and turtles . Since then, dwarf otters have also been found in the park. Later, black-tailed prairie dogs and alpacas added. Since 2008, increasingly also have monkeys and lemurs found its way in the park, first skull- and marmosets , and later cotton-top tamarins , lemurs , white-faced saki and Red Varis .

Enclosure

Most of the enclosures are themed. Often several species from one continent and one habitat are presented together. The claim, which can already be found in the park's motto, to give visitors the opportunity to get as close as possible to animals without disturbing them, is implemented, among other things, by the many walk-in enclosures. In addition to the systems for the birds of the Western Pomeranian lagoon and forest landscapes, the tropical house and a classic petting zoo, the enclosures for the following animals are also accessible:

In the night from March 31, 2018 to April 1, 2018, all aviaries were destroyed by masses of snow (over 30 centimeters of very damp fresh snow within a few hours). Most of the animals could be brought to safety beforehand, but some birds escaped, including bearded owls, black storks, a number of bald ibises and a sea eagle.

particularities

The park is particularly attractive not only because of the feedings ( great white pelicans , white storks, keas , squirrel monkeys, pygmy otters, Humboldt penguins), but also because of the flight shows of birds of prey and the bird show "Encounters with Animals", which takes place from March to October, depending on the weather take place daily. Visitors also have the opportunity to feed the Rainbow Lorikeet. Children now have seven playgrounds to choose from, some of which are thematically based on bird life.
