The Ueckermünde Zoo is a zoological garden in the city of Ueckermünde in the east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Due to the proximity of Ueckermünde to the German-Polish border, the zoo is also popular with visitors from the Republic of Poland, accounting for around ten percent of the total number of over 100,000 visitors per year . The zoo has responded to this demand with information material, an information telephone and signage in Polish .
history
The Ueckermünde zoo was opened in 1962. After 1990, a number of outdoor enclosures and accessible facilities for goats , kangaroos , monkeys as well as European mouflons and fallow deer were built , in which visitors can approach the animals without separating fences.
Animal population and equipment
Around 400 animals from around 100 species live in the approximately 18 hectare area of the park , in addition to domestic pets and wild animals as well as various small and large animals from other regions of the world, such as lions , llamas , wolves and exotic birds .
In an aquarium house designed in a typical fisherman's house architecture , mainly local fish are shown. Various historical buildings such as a windmill and a drawbridge are integrated into the facility . In the former reptile house there is currently an exhibition on sturgeon “Threatened Giants” and a sturgeon film is shown.
The zoo participates in the European conservation breeding program for otters .
Further activities and sponsorship
As a pedagogical offer there is also a zoo school, at which thematic events for subject-related science and biology lessons are offered in both German and Polish, for example as part of project days or project weeks. Part of the zoo school is a “species cemetery” with information on extinct animal species . Since 2002, the zoo has been publishing an annual zoo newspaper that is available free of charge.
The zoo is run by the “Tierpark Ueckermünde eV” association.
