The Sassnitz zoo is an animal park in the city of Sassnitz on the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen . It has been closed since November 2016 due to both bird flu and dilapidation and is to be reopened after renovation. The renovation began on July 15, 2019 and is expected to be finished in 2021. The zoo will remain closed during the renovation work.

description

Red kite

The park extends over an area of 2.5 hectares on the outskirts of the city of Sassnitz. The Steinbach flows through it and borders directly on the Jasmund National Park . The Sassnitz zoo is the only park of its kind on the largest German island. Around 250 animals from 60 species are kept in the zoo. Most of them are native species, although some exotic species also live in the park.

In addition to a kiosk, which provides catering for visitors, the park also has an open-air stage , a playground and a petting zoo. A nature trail provides information about native animals and plants. In 2001, 27,000 visitors were counted.

Livestock

Were held last among other eagles , monkeys , deer , Degu , squirrels , Elster , duck , donkey , owl , pheasant , trout , ferret , fox , rabbit , lynx , marten , guinea pigs , coati , horse , sheep , snowy owl , eagle owl , tawny owl , Wild cat , wild boar , wolf , zebra finch and goat . After the renovation, animals from the Jasmund National Park and the surrounding area will move in.

modification

In November 2016, a gray goose that had died of bird flu was discovered at the water fowl pond in the zoo . Protective measures have been taken for the birds and the park has been closed to the public. Due to further bird flu cases in the area, the park remained closed for the following months, unlike other affected zoos such as the Ueckermünde zoo.

The city had already closed the area around the dilapidated entrance building in July 2016 and continued operations with temporary reception and sanitary facilities. A renovation project costing several million euros has been considered for a number of years, because many enclosures in the park no longer meet the requirements of the EU. The aim of the city is to preserve the park and save on maintenance costs.

Since the beginning of 2017, the parked animals have been taken to other facilities and the preparatory work for the renovation, such as the demolition of stables and the securing of fence elements that are still usable, has been tackled with public participation.
