The Tierpark Wismar is a zoo on the outskirts of the Hanseatic city of Wismar , about two kilometers southwest of the historic center. The elongated, mostly wooded area in the Köppernitz valley borders on the Bürgerpark, the site of the 2002 State Garden Show .
history
The zoo has existed at its current location since 1978. Originally it was a communal facility. The zoo has been run as a non-profit association since 1991. With changes in occupation, amalgamation of enclosures and some new facilities, more space was made available to the individual animals. A walk-in facility for alpacas was built in 2016, a house for domestic fowl in the half-timbered style typical of Mecklenburg is under construction, and a walk-in bird aviary is being planned.
Livestock
The zoo has around 50 different animal species, mainly from Europe, but also some exotic forms.
Ungulates and ratites
The ostriches , red deer and fallow deer inhabit extensive grounds, the latter in a walk-in enclosure. The facility is also accessible for alpacas . In the central area there is a farm with house shapes of cattle, horses, donkeys, sheep, pigs and goats. The pygmy goats and the Chinese masked pigs can roam freely in the zoo. The bison enclosure is located on a steep slope .
Predators
The lynxes have been given a varied outdoor area, visible from a viewing platform . With climbing opportunities and the inclusion of neighboring enclosures, the facilities for raccoons and coatis have also gained space. Furthermore, silver foxes and ferrets kept.
Rodents
Black-tailed prairie dogs have built their buildings on a freely accessible playground. Degus , colored mice and colored rats form the transition to the pets.
Birds
New accommodation is under construction for various forms of domestic poultry. The old bird house with two aviaries inhabit more chicken birds and parrots as parakeets and cockatiels .
Monkey island
In the southern part of the zoo there is the monkey island in a pond , a facility for ring-tailed lemurs that visitors can enter.
Visitor facilities
Beekeeping dedicates itself to nature conservation with various beds of flowering plants. Several play areas (trampolines, pedal boats, trains) want to appeal to children.
