The Wolgast Zoo is a zoological garden in the city of Wolgast in the northeast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . In addition to its regional importance as a home animal park, the park is also gaining increasing popularity with visitors from the Republic of Poland due to the location of the city of Wolgast in the immediate vicinity of the German-Polish border . The zoo is located on the northern edge of Wolgast in the Tannenkamp residential area on a forest area of around ten hectares. Around 400 animals from 52 species can be viewed. The latest major additions include kangaroos and emusthat are kept in a common enclosure. The park also has a nature trail and a petting zoo.

history

The Wolgast zoo was created through largely voluntary construction work by the Wolgast citizens in the Wolgast Tannenkamp. This forest area belonging to the city had been a popular destination for the city's residents since the 1920s. At the end of the 1950s there were plans to expand the area into a “Volkspark Tannenkamp”. Construction work on the zoo began in October 1960, although no official approval had been obtained from the responsible authorities. This was only granted three years later on March 23, 1963, and thus only after the inauguration of the plant on May 1, 1961. At the opening, the “Heimattiergarten Wolgast” received two brown bears and one collar bear from the Rostock Zoo . Leipzig Zoo donated more animals . Starting with the first offspring of bears in 1965/1966, a successful bear breed developed in the Wolgast zoo over the following years, from which zoos throughout the GDR received offspring. On May 1, 1981, the City Council of Wolgast took over legal ownership for the entire zoo area from the state forestry company Stralsund.

After 1990 many enclosures were expanded or replaced by spacious new buildings. The successful breeding of brown Makis is unique in Germany . The park only took over these animals from Parc Merveilleux in Luxembourg in March 2005 . Since it was founded on April 24, 1994, the zoo has been sponsored by the "Tierpark Tannenkamp Wolgast eV" association.
