The Freiberg Zoo is a small zoological garden in the central Saxon town of Freiberg .

description

The area of the zoo extends about 500 meters southwest of the old town and is nestled between Goethestrasse, Chemnitzer Strasse, Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Strasse and Lessingstrasse. It houses around 160 animals in twelve different genera .

Currently live there, for example, fallow deer , mouflon , Gottingen mini-pigs , pigs , pot-bellied pigs , Mangalica pigs , tortoises and turtles , raccoons , exotic birds ( lovebirds , Amazon parrots , African gray parrots , collar parakeets , cockatiels , Rosella parakeets , zebra finches ), geese , ducks , Shetland ponies , Silk chickens , guinea pigs , rabbits , budgies , ferrets , house donkeys , West African dwarf goats , red foxes , dwarf hamsters , chinchillas , pheasants and Asian peacocks . With a stock of Skudden , the park also makes a contribution to the conservation of endangered domestic animal breeds.

In addition, the Freiberg zoo is a reception point for exotic found animals from all over Central Saxony, which were usually released by their owners. They are cared for in a species-appropriate manner by the zoo through a lease agreement. During the summer season between May and October, individual goats and fawns are used as part of animal-assisted therapy for dementia patients in old people's homes .

In 2019, the city made funds of 250,000 euros available for the zoo. In addition, however, there were more than 36,000 euros in donations. There has been a slight increase in visitor numbers over the past few years. While around 23,000 interested people came in 2015, there were around 28,000 in 2016 and just under 25,000 in 2018. However, it is not possible to give exact numbers, as there is traditionally no entry fee in Freiberg Zoo and therefore no control instrument for visitor counting is available. In 2017 there were four permanent employees working at the zoo. Peter Heinrich (* 1962) is responsible for the management.

history

In the zoo there are several statues by the sculptor and Freiberg honorary citizen Gottfried Kohl (such as the boar here ) as well as the ceramicist and sculptor Peter Wolf from Frauenstein .

From 1958 began national integration of the GDR by the transformation of a large part of the locust park with the construction of a "cultural and pioneer park". Accommodation for red deer , a bird aviary and a water fowl house were planned for 435 marks . The foundation stone was laid in 1959. Soon the pioneer organization "Ernst Thälmann" took over the management of the work and maintenance of the pioneer park, the inauguration of which was celebrated in 1961. In the 1980s it was home to almost 200 animals from 40 species . The adjoining rose garden was then used for the so-called zoo concerts.

In 2003, the renovation of the duck enclosure was the first step towards a comprehensive reconstruction of the zoo. In 2010 and 2011, the main paths were renovated, the functional and social building was renewed and a public toilet was installed.

On October 30, 2015, the Freiberger Tierpark e. V. with the aim of further expanding the zoo in a family-friendly and careful manner and of making visits available free of charge in the future. At the end of 2016, the association already had almost 70 members. The “Bambini” petting zoo was gradually set up within the zoo in 2016 and 2017 . It includes enclosures for guinea pigs and rabbits and an aviary for budgies . In 2017, a new pheasant complex was also built.

Together with the inauguration of a playground in the rose garden, the employees also opened the renewed, 90 square meter aviary for the exotic birds in July 2018. From the beginning of 2019, plans were concretized to fully integrate the rose garden into the zoo with a new fence, which would experience a significant increase in area. A combined enclosure for alpacas and rheas is to be built on the site . This eliminates the easternmost of three park entrances on Chemnitzer Straße. Preparatory work for the expansion began in March of the same year. In August, a new gate was installed in the former rose garden at the Lessingstrasse exit, and between September and November the pedestrian bridge that separates the duck pond from the Pferdeschwemme lake will be renewed.
