Lake Tilicho (pronunciation: Tilitscho ) is located at an altitude of 4919  m in the Annapurna region in central Nepal .

It is about 3.8 km long and 1.6 km wide. It is 1110 m higher than the highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca, and is sometimes referred to as the highest lake on earth; In fact, there are still some, even larger, lakes at higher altitudes (e.g. the crater lake of Licancabur at 5900  m ).

In the southwest of the lake is the Grande Barriere with Tilicho Peak ( 7134  m ) as the highest peak. Tilicho Lake can be reached from the Annapurna Circuit either from Jomsom via Mesokantu La ( 5100  m ) or from Manang through the Khangsar Valley. The way over the Mesokantu La leads through the closed military training area near Kaisang . Another path leads further north over a pass called "Mesokantu North" or "Tilicho Tourist La". This path leads north past the restricted area. Lake Tilicho begins to freeze over in November. At the end of December it is usually completely frozen and only thaws again in April.

The section of the path from Manang through the Khangsar Valley is exposed in some places and can be quite uncomfortable with ice and rockfall, so that it should be reserved for trekkers who are free from vertigo and sure- footed . The altitude sickness can be a problem for poorly acclimatized trekkers. Objectively, the Mesokantu La is more difficult than the nearby Thorong La , although it is lower.
