Till Neu (* 1943 in Saarbrücken ) is a German painter and author.

life and work

Till Neu studied from 1963 to 1967 at the Werkkunstschule Saarbrücken with Oskar Holweck , at the art academy in Kassel (painting with Fritz Winter) and at the Saarland University of Art History, German Studies and Philosophy. The doctorate took place in 1976 in art history with Wilhelm Messerer on 'Basics of design'. From 1984 to 2004 he was a professor at the University of Frankfurt / M.

New was a member of the workshop Koop and the resulting Koop Südwest with the gallery 22-24. During this time joint projects and publications with artists and writers, for example "Fisematenten" (1973) and "DPA - Zeitmesser" (1975).

Till Neu became known in the early 1970s for his small tempera pictures (16 × 16 cm) with everyday, also currently political motifs (women on the beach, a bag on a car seat, city and landscape pictures). Like all of his works, they are characterized by intense colors and playful narration.

The occupation with screen printing also falls during this period - the (cheap) possibility of reproduction is understood politically, as the possibility of bringing art to all strata of the population. Four-color serigraphs in small format are also created - multiplicates in contrast to the art market for unique items.

A trip took him to Provence for the first time in 1976 , where he will return again and again. The ocher colors and the landscape of Provence, especially Mont Ventoux and the Romanesque architecture, trigger many works.

At first the miniature was his popular format, but later he turned to the large format. Mention should be made of "picture locations" from Berlin-Potsdam, the pictures 'le bien' and 'le mal' (188 × 212 cm) or 'old world picture' (400 × 164 cm) from 2013.

Inspired by the text 'Letters to a dead poet' by Agnès Rouzier , he painted 'Seven Pictures for Agnès Rouzier' in 2017.

Between 1997 and 2007 Till Neu was a member of the international board of trustees for brown coal mining recultivation in Bitterfeld .

In addition to his artistic work, he published numerous scientific publications on art and art education.

Neu lives and works in Saarbrücken and Villes-sur-Auzon in the Vaucluse department . Since 2010 he has been inviting artists to stay in his house in Provence under the heading “Refuge”.
