Tilmann Krieg (born May 29, 1954 in Stuttgart ) is a German artist , photographer , author and designer .

Life

Tilmann Krieg was born in 1954 in Stuttgart as the son of the psychoanalyst Dieter Krieg and Maria-Elisabeth Krieg- von Spiegel zum Desenberg . He is the great-nephew of the doctor, ethnologist and zoologist Hans Krieg .

After training as a photographer, Tilmann Krieg studied visual communication at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences with a focus on illustration, book design and photography with Klaus Kammerichs and Rudi Assmann. Graduated in 1981 as a designer (visual communication, focus on illustration) with Hans Georg Lenzen and Klaus E. Neelen. He then took up a second degree with Sarkis at the Haute école des arts du Rhin , Strasbourg (1981–1984). From 1979 exhibitions, initially as a painter, etcher and draftsman.

In 1999 he turned away from classical painting and developed an independent world of expression in painterly photography, which at times goes to the limits of abstraction. The basic concept of his work is the representation of the dimension "time" in the picture, i. H. the traces of movement of the passing moment that emerge in the recording. The pictures created in this way have a strong painterly impression. The works of Krieg are therefore more likely to be assigned to the border area between painting and photography, as they are actually more frozen film sequences than sharp photographic time slices. The aesthetics of his works are repeatedly compared with those of Gerhard Richter in reviews , especially figurative works such as Krieg's “upstairs” show parallels to Richter's “Ema”, even if the technical approach of both artists is almost diametrically opposed.

The first photographs of the war, which already show this way of dealing with light and time, were published in 1999, at the beginning of digital photography. War subsequently worked in North America, Brazil, Ethiopia, Morocco, Korea and China. The main themes are people and urban life, which appear in theme cycles. The “Metro” series is outstanding, with the subways of various megapoles symbolizing the journey of life and the “blood circulation” of modern urban life.

Simultaneously with his visual language, he developed his subjects and an unusual technique of his mostly large-format photography. Most of the time he develops his photos directly on steel, copper or aluminum. The photographic templates are often expanded through painterly intervention. Occasionally, Krieg deforms his works into spatial objects and assemblages that sculpturally reach into the space. He also experiments with new materials and techniques, for example silvering steel or copper plates as carrier material for his photographic motifs.

War's work - although it uses photographic means - is more likely to be assigned to painting. In terms of its artistic concept, it also goes far beyond classic photography. What is significant is the idiosyncratic use of materials such as steel, aluminum or silver, but also of large-format prints on transparent films that hang freely in the room. In 2015, Krieg created the visual symphony “Metropolis”, which premiered on November 1, 2015 in the Church of St. Johannes Nepomuk in Kehl: a work in twelve movements that broadcasts music, sound collages and image projections from eight projectors across the entire space into the architecture (duration : 54 minutes).

Since around 2007, photographic installations and projection work have come to the fore in wartime work, in works such as "Cores", "Sua vida", "Metro - east-west line", "Imagery", some of which are performed within concert events. There have been solo and group exhibitions in many countries in the Old and New World, and war is represented in many public collections. Several projects were realized at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut in Paris, Los Angeles, Salvador Bahia, Addis Ababa, Frankfurt am Main.

There are large sculptures of war in public spaces that use light and the means of photography.

In 2008, Tilmann Krieg won the Photo Art Prize at the Seoul International Art Fair (KIAF) with “shooting hidden spot”. In summer 2010 he was one of the international artists invited by the city and the Suwon Art Association (South Korea) to set up an installation in the context of the world cultural heritage (project: "Haengungdong People").
