Tim de Zeeuw

Pieter Timotheus "Tim" de Zeeuw (* 1956 in Sleen , Netherlands ) is a Dutch astronomer specializing in the formation, structure and dynamics of galaxies .

education

His higher education began at the University of Leiden , where he in the year 1976 degrees in Mathematics and in 1977 in Astronomy attained. He graduated cum laude from Leiden with a PhD in astronomy in 1984 .

Career

After stays in the USA at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and at Caltech , he returned to the Netherlands in 1990 , where he was appointed professor of theoretical astronomy by the University of Leiden.

In 2003 he was named Scientific Director of the Leiden Observatory and from 2007 to 2017 he was Director General of the European Southern Observatory .

Then in 2010 he received the Brouwer Award from the Division on Dynamical Astronomy of the American Astronomical Society .

Private life

He is married to the astronomer Ewine van Dishoeck .
