Time and a Word is the second album by the British progressive rock band Yes . It dates from 1970.

Emergence

In early 1970 the band retired to a farm in Devon to work on their second album. Once again it soon became apparent that Atlantic Records would not invest a lot of money in the production. Instead, band manager Roy Flynn invested a large amount of private money in the album.

Since at this point many rock bands began to work with orchestras ( Deep Purple , The Nice , The Moody Blues ), it was decided to follow this trend and record the new album together with strings (students of the Royal College of Music ) and some winds . Keyboardist Tony Kaye and guitarist Peter Banks were not very enthusiastic about this idea, however, as it meant a severe limitation of their role as instrumentalists. This created the first tensions, especially between Banks and the rest of the band.

Again the album could not be recorded continuously. Instead, the band worked between short tours and solo concerts. Tony Colton, the singer of the band Head, Hands and Feet and friend of Jon Anderson's , was hired as a producer , while Eddie Offord, whom Phil Carson, at the time with Yes' record company Atlantic Records, already knew from previous joint projects, became the sound engineer. Offord was not only responsible for the sound of the album, he also made friends with the musicians and convinced them of the vegetarian diet.

The new album contained eight tracks, including two cover versions ( No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed by Richie Havens and Everydays by Stephen Stills ) and two works by Anderson with his former bandmate (with the Warriors ) and friend David Foster ( Sweet Dreams and Time And A Word ), in which he can also be heard as a singer or guitarist, which Peter Banks also disliked.

Remarks:

  • Once again, a Yes album contained two cover versions (Yes were still playing current hits at their concerts at that time): No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed by Richie Havens and Everydays by Stephen Stills . No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed was supplemented by a musical theme from the title melody of the western film The Big Country (German title: Weites Land ) (the violin motif at the beginning of the song)
  • For the US release, Banks' solo in Sweet Dreams was cut out and mixed up a little in other places
  • Tony Kaye quotes in the introduction to The Prophet the theme of the Jupiter sentence from the work The Planets by Gustav Holst .
  • An Anderson / Banks song called Number 14 Bus , which Yes were working on at the time, was not included on the album. Dear Father was only as a B-side of the single Sweet Dreams published

Cover

The simple black and white cover with which the album was released in England shows a naked woman lying with her legs in the direction of the viewer in an abstract room and her head sticking out of the room. The back names the song titles and contains five portrait photos as well as the Yes speech bubble, the band's early logo.

In the USA, Atlantic puts a recent group photo on the front, which shows the time-and-a-word guitarist Peter Banks' successor Steve Howe. The back of the US cover is identical to the UK version.

For the German release, you decide on the US cover of the first album and add the title "Time and a Word" to it. The back shows a group photo in the Yes balloon, song title and cast list.

A more recent Russian LP reprint shows the British cover in color.

Review

The second Yes album shows a band that is still looking for their later style. Working with an orchestra documents the attempt to expand the tonal palette of the rock band, an effect that Yes later achieved primarily through the use of a variety of different keyboards and guitars. Stylistically, the album moves between Beatles-influenced pop ( Sweet Dreams , Time and a Word ), jazz ( Everydays ) and early progressive rock (especially in the complexly arranged Then ).

Time and a Word , like its previous album Yes , had no success (number 45 in the GB charts), which caused further tension in the band. Atlantic Records threatened to drop the band, Peter Banks, who saw himself underrepresented on the album, fell out with his fellow musicians more and more often, and Roy Flynn, who was actually a club owner and had little experience in managing a rock band, soon followed replaced by a new manager after publication. Humanly disappointed by a band in which he had invested a lot of private money, he broke off contact with the musicians, with the exception of his friend Peter Banks, who was thrown out of the band on Colton's advice.

On March 28, 1970 Yes played a concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, during the second half of which they were accompanied by a small 20-piece orchestra under the direction of Tony Cox. During this concert they also played Something's Coming , an adaptation of Bernstein from West Side Story .
