Tirumayam or Thirumayam ( Tamil திருமயம் Tirumayam ), more rarely Tirumeyyam (Tamil: திருமெய்யம் ), is a larger village with about 9,000 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

location

Tirumayam lies at an altitude of approx. 100 m above sea level. d. M. about 20 km south of the district capital Pudukkottai . The almost tropical climate is mostly humid; Rain falls mainly in the monsoon months from July to December.

population

The inhabitants of Tirumayyam are almost exclusively Hindus ; Members of other religions are extremely rare among the rural population in southern India. The female share of the population is slightly higher than the male.

economy

The inhabitants live almost exclusively from agriculture. Small traders and craftsmen have settled in the town center, who also benefit from the good transport links.

history

In the early Middle Ages, the area belonged to the Pallava Empire, which was gradually taken over by the regaining Chola Empire in the 9th century . In the 13th century, the Madurai- based Pandya dynasty took power. The two gopuram gate towers of the temple indicate a later affiliation to the Vijayanagar empire.

Attractions

  • The main attraction of the place is the fort built in 1687 by Setupati (local ruler) of Ramanathapuram . The fortress stands on a granite rock formation that rises from the otherwise flat surrounding area. The outer walls of the fort including the battlements are relatively well preserved. A brick platform with a cannon rises up in the empty interior of the fort.
  • At the foot of the rock there are two cave temples , one of which is dedicated to the god Shiva in his form as Satyagiriswara and the other to Vishnu as Satyamurti-Perumal . The later walled temple area of the Vishnu temple has a large temple pond ( Pushkarini ) and two imposing gopuram - gatehouses ; it belongs to the Divya Desams , the 108 holy places of Tamil Vishnuism . It was sung about in the devotional hymns of the Alvar poet Tirumangai Alvar as early as the 8th century .
