After Indian independence, Tiruttani came in 1953 with the Chittoor district to the newly founded state of Andhra (from 1956 Andhra Pradesh) from the Telugu-speaking northern part of the state of Madras . Because of its predominantly Tamil population and the importance of the Murugan Temple of Tiruttani for the Tamils, the Taluk Tiruttani was added in 1960 to the state of Madras (renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969), which has now been reorganized according to the language borders of Tamil.

Religious meaning

The Murugan Temple at Tiruttani

In Tiruttani there is the Subramaniyaswamy temple, an important sanctuary of the Hindu god Murugan (Skanda) , on a 200 meter high rock . While this god plays practically no role in the practice of faith in northern India, he is one of the most popular deities among the Tamils under the name Murugan. Tiruttani is one of six pilgrimage sites ( Arupadaividu ) in Tamil Nadu that are dedicated to Murugan. The six pilgrimage sites are each associated with different aspects of Murugan's mythology. According to the myth, Tiruttani is the place to which Murugan retired with his companion Valli after his wedding .

The most important temple festivals in Tiruttani are the Adi Krittigai Festival , which is celebrated annually in the Tamil month of Adi (July / August), as well as a festival on December 31, on which the believers climb the 365 steps to the temple and on each of light them a light to be blessed for the new year. As one of the six Murugan pilgrimage sites, Tiruttani attracts large numbers of pilgrims. According to press reports, more than 100,000 pilgrims flocked to Tiruttani for the Adi Krittigai festival in 2011.
