Titan Spezialfahrzeuge GmbH is a manufacturer of heavy-duty vehicles and special vehicles. The company with around 60 employees has been based in Backnang since 1994 . Titan relocated its headquarters to the Sulzbach an der Murr production site in September 2011 .

production

The company produces the heavy-duty tractor variant SLT of the Mercedes-Benz Actros for Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz trucks (Mercedes-Benz Custom Tailored Trucks) , mostly based on the heaviest chassis with the most powerful series engine, currently the OM 502 LA in V8 design. Type designations such as 4860 or 4165 refer to a permissible total weight of 48 tons (export) or 41 tons and an engine output of approx. 600 or 650 hp, using the key that is customary for Mercedes trucks. Normally one has been a torque converter clutch (WSK 440 of ZF Friedrichshafen with up to 2700 Nm input torque) is installed as normal couplings through which, in heavy transports are overloaded so usual, on construction sites creep. The torque converter allows starting with high trailer loads (up to 250 tonnes per tractor unit), whereby the resulting frictional heat is dissipated by means of a large transmission oil cooler behind the driver's cab .

Newer models such as the Actros 4165 SLT use a turbo coupling with the “wear-free integrated start-up and braking element” (VIAB) from Voith Turbo instead of the WSK , which works more efficiently and is also designed for the 653 hp Euro 5 engine variant with 3000 Nm torque is. A Mercedes-Benz Powershift G280-16 with 16 gears is used as the transmission, and a retarder supports the braking systems. Three or four axles are offered, of which two, three or four (8x8) are driven. The all-wheel-drive four-axle top model 4165 SLT 8 × 8 with an unladen weight of 14 tonnes can carry an axle load of 7.5 tonnes per steering axle, 13 tonnes per twin-tire rear axle, resulting in a total weight of 41 tonnes. The installation of a fourth axle also requires the relocation of the fuel tank and other units normally attached to the frame, so that together with the air filter, exhaust, hydraulic oil tank, brake air tank, AdBlue tank etc., a typical "heavy duty tower" is created behind the cab. Further equipment is a massive front bumper with Rockinger trailer coupling or heavy-duty register coupling, which allows several tractor units to be coupled in series or a load to be pushed from behind. A ballast box on the rear wheels can take weights that provide better traction when a semi-trailer is not used. The vehicles are also equipped with off-road tires and can be used in desert areas, e.g. for transporting tanks.

Titan also builds oversized heavy-duty tractors and oil field vehicles for special operations, especially on oil fields in Africa and the Arab region, where the restrictions on dimensions, axle loads and weights that apply on European roads do not have to be complied with when drilling rigs are transported over unpaved roads. The Titan Z 80 600 F 8x8 oil field vehicle with a width of 350 cm and an empty weight of 30 tons has a permissible total weight of up to 80 tons and can pull up to 500 tons. The heavy-duty tractor Titan Z 64 600 F 8x8 weighs 22.5 tons when empty, can carry 42 tons of semi-trailer load and pull up to 1000 tons. Mercedes Actros cabs and engines are installed in these vehicles, as well as axles from Kessler + Co. , with 29.5 R 25 tires. The function of the cooling is guaranteed up to 50 ° C, especially for the variants with an engine under a long hood in front of the Cab.

Titan also builds the chassis for airfield fire-fighting vehicles such as the Rosenbauer Simba 8 × 8 HRET. Two more powerful Mercedes-Benz Actros V8 engines in a titanium T52-1400 8x8 chassis are coupled via two Allison Transmission 4800 SP torque converter transmissions with retarders and drive four Kessler axles. According to international regulations, such an airfield fire engine must accelerate to 80 km / h in less than 21 seconds. In the Simba, which weighs up to 52 t, this is done by the 1400 hp engines, which also enable a top speed of 135 km / h.

In addition, oversized forklifts are manufactured or additional equipment such as additional rear axle steering or modified driver's cabs.
