Edward Charles Titchmarsh (born June 1, 1899 in Newbury (Berkshire) , † January 18, 1963 in Oxford ) was an English mathematician specializing in analysis .

Life

The son of a clergyman at the age of 17 won a scholarship to Balliol College at Oxford University in an open examination in 1916 and began his studies at Oxford - interrupted by the war-related military service with the Royal Engineers from 1918 to 1919. His main teacher was Godfrey Harold Hardy , with whom he also shared a passion for cricket.

He graduated with honors in 1922 and became a senior lecturer at University College London the following year . He also won a prize scholarship in Oxford and represented Hardy, who had gone to Princeton as a visiting professor from 1928 to 1929 . After two years as a professor in Liverpool , he took over the Savilian Chair of Geometry at Oxford University in 1932 as the successor to Hardy, who moved to Cambridge. In 1963 Titchmarsh retired.

He worked almost exclusively in classical analysis and wrote several very well-known and widely used textbooks. Even if these deal with important topics for number theory ( Riemann's zeta function ) and physics (eigenfunction developments), he was only interested in the analytical side. The titles of his textbooks also reflect his main areas of work.

His PhD students include Mary Cartwright and John Bryce McLeod .

Titchmarsh was accepted as a member (" Fellow ") in 1931 in the Royal Society , which in 1955 awarded him the New Year's Eve Medal . In 1954 he gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam ( Eigenfunction problems arising from differential equations ).

He had been married since 1925 and had three daughters.
