Titia de Lange
Titia de Lange (* 1955 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch cell biologist and geneticist at Rockefeller University in New York City .
De Lange studied at the University of Amsterdam and obtained a Ph.D. in 1985 from Piet Borst at the Nederlands Kanker Instituut (NKI, Dutch Cancer Institute). in biochemistry . As a postdoctoral fellow , she worked with Harold Varmus at the University of California, San Francisco . She has been a professor at Rockefeller University in New York City since 1990 , initially as an assistant professor and since 1994 as an associate professor . In 1997 she received a full professorship and has been co-director of the Anderson Center for Cancer Research since 2011 . Her research professorship is funded by the American Cancer Society .
De Lange's work broadened our understanding of telomeres , the protected ends of chromosomes . She was able to identify most of the known components of the telomeres and discovered that telomeres form a loop. She discovered the shelterin complex as a further protective mechanism . With her work, de Lange has elucidated the cellular response to dysfunction of the telomeres and was able to show how the telomere-associated proteins control the length of the telomeres.
