Tobias Willi (born November 7, 1976 in Brugg ) is a Swiss organist and professor at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) .

Life

Tobias Willi studied from 1997 to 2003 at the Hochschule für Musik Basel , majoring in organ with Guy Bovet (teaching and soloist diploma with distinction) and piano with Heinz Börlin and Jürg Wyttenbach (teaching diploma with distinction). From autumn 2003 to summer 2005 he completed postgraduate studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) in the organ class of Olivier Latry and Michel Bouvard . In this context there was an intensive examination of French organ music from the Renaissance to the modern age.

From January 2007 to November 2014 Willi was the main organist of the reformed parish of Pfäffikon . Since January 2015 he has been the main organist of the Johanneskirche Zurich .

As a professor of artistic organ playing and improvisation, Willi has been teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) since spring semester 2010.

Willi also gives concerts regularly in Switzerland and throughout Europe (including at the Lucerne Festival 2004, the Feldkirch Festival 2009, in Notre-Dame de Paris , in the Fulda Cathedral , in the Freiburg Minster , in the Mariinski Theater in St. Petersburg and in the cathedrals from Bourges and Monaco ). He is not only active as a soloist, but also in various duo formations - for example together with the Swiss saxophonist Lars Mlekusch .

Tobias Willi's repertoire includes organ music from its beginnings to the present. The music of the 19th to the 21st century is a focus of his work. Numerous world premieres (by Jean-Pierre Leguay , Mattias Steinauer, Junghae Lee and others) testify to this . In 2014 and 2015 he also performed the complete works for organ by Olivier Messiaen in six concerts. In addition, Willi realized various interdisciplinary projects, such as the improvised accompaniment of silent films on the organ.
