life and work

Tobie Miller grew up in a family of classical musicians in Vancouver and Montreal . Her mother was a violinist, her father a tuba player. At the age of three she played the violin under the guidance of her mother, and later also the piano. The love for early music also arose early on in the form of a passion for collecting corresponding recordings. She graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a degree in early music performance practice. She continued her studies in the flute and singing of the Middle Ages at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis , where she earned her diploma in 2008 and an MA in music education in 2012. Her studies in Basel were supported by the Canadian Cultural Council and the JBC Watkins Award. For 2011 and 2012 Miller received another grant from the Canadian Council of Culture to study the baroque hurdy-gurdy. During this time she transcribed cello and violin works by Johann Sebastian Bach for the baroque hurdy-gurdy.

Tobie Miller gives concerts as a music interpreter on the baroque hurdy-gurdy in various formations. Sometimes she plays in a duo with the Austrian hurdy-gurdy player Matthias Loibner . She gives concerts in smaller early music ensembles such as Baroque de Limoges , Les Musiciens de Saint Julien , Per-Sonat , Le Miroir de Musique , Leones and with her own ensembles La Rota and Ensemble Danguy. The latter is named after the famous French hurdy-gurdy player Danguy from the 18th century. The debut CD with her ensemble Danguy La Belle vielleuse with 18th century sonatas for the hurdy-gurdy was very well received by music critics. Tobie Miller also gives concerts in larger formations under conductors such as Jordi Savall , Christophe Coin and Wieland Kuijken .

In addition to her concert activities, she regularly teaches in workshops and festivals such as Over the Water Hurdy Gurdy Festival , Les Journées de La Flûte à Bec , Asociaciòn Ibérica de la Zanfona , Sherborne Early Music Society and at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis .
