The Tohono O'odham Nation Reservation is an Indian reservation in the southern US state of Arizona in Pima County and Pinal County . It is 60 miles west of Tucson , Arizona. The reserve 18,000 live on the 24,000 Tohono O'Odham - Indians . With an area of ​​11,913 km², it is larger than the US state Connecticut . Many of the reserve's residents live below the poverty line. The reserve borders the Mexican state of Sonora to the south, the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Base to the west, the Sonoran Desert National Monument to the north and the Ironwood Forest National Monument and to the east the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge .
