Life and career

Jennifer Lee grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles and first learned to play classical piano. At the age of eleven, she bought her first hip-hop album, Coolios Gangsta’s Paradise, and discovered the genre for herself. With a Roland SP-404 and Fruity Loops , she finally began to produce her own music. According to her own statements, she felt drawn to instrumental music because in hip-hop the sound of the verse was always more important to her than the text. Lee names DJ Krush , J Dilla , RZA , Dr. Dre and DJ Shadow . She had her first successes as a producer in Europe, where her music was first played on the BBC and she finally went on a self-organized tour. In 2009 she released her EP Cosmic Intoxication on the London label Ramp Recording .

During her student days, Lee took part in a monthly open mic in Los Angeles , where she finally met Flying Lotus , who she signed for his label Brainfeeder. Together with producers such as Teebs , Daedelus and The Gaslamp Killer , she played an important role in the up-and-coming scene in her hometown. She chose the stage name Tokimonsta based on "Toki", the Korean word for "rabbit". Since she did not want to be fetishized, she had initially tried to keep her gender and Korean origin a secret, but this did not succeed due to her online presence.

In addition to her solo projects, Tokimonsta worked with Kool Keith , MNDR and Thirsty Fish , among others . In 2015 she also produced the album You're Invited with the singer Gavin Turek .
