Tom B. Bottomore

Thomas Burton Bottomore (born April 8, 1920 - December 9, 1992 in Sussex ) was a British sociologist .

life and work

Bottomore studied at the London School of Economics and was there from 1952 to 1964 lecturer ( reader ) for sociology . He then taught from 1965 to 1967 as a professor at Simon Fraser University (British Columbia, Canada) and from 1968 to 1985 as a professor of sociology at the University of Sussex .

Bottomore was a sociologist known beyond Great Britain. His Introduction to Sociology ( Sociology , 1962) was also widely used in the non-English speaking world. In addition to his numerous publications on classes , elites , sociological analysis and modern capitalism , he acted as editor of A Dictionary of Marxist Thought (1983) and The Blackwell Dictionary of Twentieth Century Social Thought (1993) and as a translator.

From 1974 to 1978 he was President of the International Sociological Association .

Bottomore was a member of the Labor Party . His unorthodox Marxism was based on Austromarxism and the Frankfurt School .
