Mathieu Roy (born August 10, 1983 in Saint-Martin-de-Beauce , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been playing for Rouen Hockey in Ligue Magnus since June 2017 .

Career

Mathieu Roy began his career as a hockey player with the Foreurs de Val-d'Or , for which he was active from 1999 to 2003 in the Canadian junior league QMJHL and won the Coupe du Président in the 2000/01 season . After his time with the Foreurs, the defender was selected in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round as a total of 215 players by the Edmonton Oilers .

After accruing in his first two years in the Oilers' franchise exclusively for their farm teams , the Toronto Roadrunners and their successor Edmonton Road Runners from the American Hockey League and the Columbus Cottonmouths from the ECHL , the right-shooter gave up during the 2005/06 season made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Oilers. This season, however, he was only on the ice once in the NHL, while he spent the rest of the time in their new AHL farm team, Hamilton Bulldogs . Also in the period from 2007 to 2009 Roy could not prevail in the NHL team of the Edmonton Oilers and played almost exclusively for their AHL farm team Springfield Falcons . On July 14, 2009, he therefore signed a contract as a free agent with Edmonton's league rivals Columbus Blue Jackets .

In March 2010 he was transferred to the Florida Panthers , for which he did not appear and instead played for the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL. On July 29, 2010, he signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Lightning . After starting the 2010/11 season in the NHL, he was sent to the Norfolk Admirals after four games . For the following season, the Canadian was signed by the Carolina Hurricanes , but did not complete an NHL game for the Canes and spent the season with the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League.

From 2012 Roy played in the German Ice Hockey League for the Hamburg Freezers , where he played with his former partner Duvie Westcott from the Blue Jackets for the next three years . After two contract extensions, the French-Canadian had a contract with the Hamburgers until the end of the 2016/17 season, but the Freezers announced in May 2016 that they would not apply for a DEL license for the 2016/17 season, so Roy's involvement with the Hamburg club ended .

In July 2016, EC Red Bull Salzburg from the Austrian Ice Hockey League (EBEL) announced Roy's commitment. For the red bulls he only played one game in the EBEL due to several injuries.
