The Edmonton Road Runners were a Canadian ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League from Edmonton in the province of Alberta , which participated in the game operation in the 2004/05 season . The Road Runners' venue was Rexall Place .
history
After the 2003/04 season in the American Hockey League , the Edmonton Oilers decided to relocate the Toronto Roadrunners from Toronto to Edmonton . The Road Runners played in the Oilers arena. It was an unusual decision for North American sports to have their own farm team in the same city, but this decision was made with a view to the lockout in the National Hockey League during the 2004/05 NHL season .
Although the team started the season well and had an average attendance of 8,854 per game, the AHL was officially asked for permission to withdraw the team from the league on June 6, 2005. This happened after the negotiations for the resumption of play in the NHL for the following season had progressed significantly. Although the Oilers still own the rights to the inactive franchise, those responsible decided to cooperate with the Springfield Falcons from the AHL instead of reactivating the Road Runners. On February 9, 2010 - almost five years after the inactivity began - the Edmonton Oilers announced that they would be relocating their farm team to Oklahoma City for the 2010/11 season .
