Tom Briele (born April 6, 1956 in Essen ) is a German filmmaker.

life and work

From 1975 to 1985 Briele studied at the University of Essen . In 1981 he passed his first state examination as a high school teacher (secondary level I) in the subjects of education, art and biology. The main topics were media analysis and media education. In 1985 he graduated as a qualified pedagogue with a focus on the history of mass communication as the basis of media pedagogical decisions . In the 1980s he was a co-founder of the Medienzentrum Ruhr eV in Essen and co-founder of the " OK43 Labor des Open Channel ". Since 1993 he has been carrying out freelance projects.

He was Grünzer and co-founder of the "Video Group Department of Art Education", the "Medienzentrum Ruhr eV", the "OK43 Labor", and was involved in the experimental expansion of the Open Channel Essen , together with Tom Alker and Hans-Werner Fittkau . Since 1993 he has been active in media work (media training, TV reports, EXPO / trade fairs, documentary films, installation and performance). He worked on "Views from the Ruhr Area - Regional Festival for Video and Film", on "Violence and Television in Germany", on the development of a media package in cooperation with the Adolf Grimme Institute, Marl on behalf of the Goethe Institute, Munich and was on international lecture tours. From 2000 to 2005 he had a teaching position at the University of Duisburg-Essen , "Communication design course".

His work focuses on documentary film (direction, camera and editing), media training and media art . Since 1993 he has been working as a freelance journalist and filmmaker in his hometown of Essen. He is married to the urban planner and architect Sabine Weismüller.
