Tom Cairns
Tom Cairns (born November 1, 1952 in Dromara , Northern Ireland ) is an Irish director , set designer and screenwriter .
Life
He was born to Thomas James and Nora Lillian Cairns and took his mother's name. After leaving school, he learned from Margaret Frances Harris (1904-2000) as a set and costume designer. He then made a career at the English National Opera in London and Opera North in Leeds, among others . He made a name for himself as an opera director at the Bregenz Festival , De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam and the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp .
In July 2016 he made his debut as the world premiere director of The Exterminating Angel , an opera by Thomas Adès , at the Salzburg Festival .
