Zana Briski
Zana Briski (born October 25, 1966 in London ) is a British photographer and documentary filmmaker . In 2005 she won an Oscar for her film Born in a brothel - Children in the red light district of Calcutta .
Life
Briski studied at the University of Cambridge and the International Center of Photography in New York . In 1995, she first traveled to India and reported on the local infanticide . She returned there in 1997 and began working on a project on prostitution in Calcutta . Briski has won numerous prizes and grants for her photographs, including first place in the Daily Life category from the World Press Photo Foundation in 2000 . In 2002 she founded the organization Kids with Cameras .
In her documentary film Im Bordell Born - Children in the Red Light District of Calcutta (orig: Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids ) about the children of prostitutes in Calcutta's red light district, for which she had researched for years and which finally premiered in 2004, she took over Ross Kauffman did the production, direction, camera work and wrote the script. Both were awarded an Oscar in the Best Documentary Film category at the 2005 Academy Awards . They also won a number of other awards at various international film festivals and award ceremonies, including the National Board of Review Award , Independent Spirit Award and the LACFA Award . In addition, there was the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival and a nomination at the DGA Awards .
