Thomas Doane Chambers (born June 21, 1959 in Ogden , Utah ) is a retired American basketball player . Between 1981 and 1998 he played in the NBA for the teams of the San Diego Clippers , Seattle SuperSonics , Phoenix Suns , Utah Jazz , Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers . He was the first player to change clubs as a free agent (from the Sonics to the Suns in 1988).

Career

Chambers first played for the University of Utah . In the 1981 NBA Draft he was selected 8th by the San Diego Clippers , where he had a good rookie season and scored 17.2 points per game, with a 52.5% hit rate. Due to the engagement of Terry Cummings in the subsequent draft, Chambers was sold to the Seattle SuperSonics in the summer of 1983 , where he became one of the best power forwards in the league.

In 1988, Chambers moved to the Suns, who made him a good offer. Here he scored 25.7 in the 1988-89 season and even 27.2 points per game in the 1989-90 season. Together with Kevin Johnson they both formed a strong offensive tandem that reached the conference final in 1991. In 1992, superstar Charles Barkley was hired by the Suns, so Chambers found himself in the role of Best Banker. In this role, Chambers reached the 1993 NBA finals, where they lost to the Chicago Bulls .

During his time with the SuperSonics and Suns, Chambers was one of the best forwards in the league. He was called up to the NBA All-Star Game four times (1987, 1989, 1990 and 1991). In 1987 he was voted Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Games. He was also twice in the All-NBA Second Team (1989, 1990). His jersey number 24 was withdrawn by the Suns in Chamber's honor.

Between 1993 and 1995 he played as a backup for Karl Malone with the Utah Jazz , with whom he reached the Western Conference finals in 1994. After a brief stint at Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, he returned in 1997 and played in a limited role for the Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers .
