Tom Dixon

Tom Dixon (born May 21, 1959 in Sfax ) is a British designer and founder and creative director of Tom Dixon , which deals with lighting, furniture and other aspects of interior design. His works can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum as well as in the Museum of Modern Art in New York or in the Center Georges-Pompidou in Paris .

Dixon spent the first years of his life in Egypt and Morocco before his family moved to London. Throughout the 1980s, Tom Dixon was considered extremely talented, but he was without formal training. He founded Space as a creative think tank and supported other designers at the same time. At the end of the 1980s he worked for the design company Cappellini in Italy, for which he designed the 'S' chair .

'Mirrorballs'

With 'Jack', his “sitting, stacking, lighting thing” made of polyethylene , which he had designed for his own company Eurolounge , he became known nationwide for the first time. In 1993 he took part in the "largest retrospective of British furniture designers of the 20th century" organized by Helmut Diez in Bremerhaven .

In 1998 Dixon became Head of Design at Habitat , then Creative Director until 2008 . During this time, Dixon developed its own brand under his name in 2002, located on London's Portobello Road . 2004 invested the Swedish investment company Proventus to design research to establish, in a product development company. This was followed by exhibitions in Milan , London and at Maison et Objet in Paris.

In 2007 Dixon founded Design Research Studio , a design studio for architecture and interior design. There was u. a. the restaurant of the Royal Academy in London. His company also redesigned the Sea Containers House on the Thames together with the Morgans Hotel Group .

He designed the Delaktig sofa bed for the Ikea furniture store .

He is married and has two daughters.

honors and awards

In 2001 Dixon was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to British design. Dixon received an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University in 2004 and the University of the Arts London in 2007 .
