biography

Family, education and work

Helmut Diez was born in 1953 as the son of Wolfgang Diez († May 1986). He moved with his family to Stuttgart in 1960 and to Nuremberg in 1969 . Helmut Diez lived in Hamburg and Denmark from 1970 to 1972 , and in Sweden until 1974 . From 1974 he studied economics and social sciences as well as development policy in Nuremberg and Bremen . He completed his studies with his diploma thesis on the assessment of superiors and employees, based on the draft of a new assessment system for the Porst Group in 1978.

Employee participation, job security, corporate development

Diez, who submitted the aforementioned thesis on the Porst group , was involved in the development of the so-called Porst model on this basis , more precisely the assessment of employees and superiors. The process initiated by Hannsheinz Porst was hotly debated in public at the time. In 1971, Porst had "said goodbye to the workforce as an entrepreneur and recommended it as a new employee". The employees were given extensive autonomy in the organization of their work, as well as an exclusive right to the profits. At that time, the Porst Group still had 2,500 employees, five years later it was fewer than 1,400. When Udo Knop, member of the board of directors of the Bank für Gemeinwirtschaft and chairman of the advisory board of the group of companies, objected to Porst's preferred model Hannsheinz Porst removes the banker and Ekkehard Schumann from the advisory board. Helmut Diez had designed the analytical job evaluation system on the basis of his diploma thesis as the basis for the intended transparent remuneration, which was tariffed with the trade union trade, banks and insurance on January 1, 1977. In the run-up to this, he had already been commissioned during his studies to develop criteria for the aforementioned transparent remuneration, which should depend exclusively on the requirements of the respective position. At Porst, however, the superiors were not only paid according to the requirements, but also assessed by the employees and, if necessary, voted out.

Diez also pursued the goal of greater employee participation in subsequent projects. At the beginning of 1976 he was one of the first organizational developers in Germany and developed support and coaching concepts for groups and individuals. A scientific review of the work, in which Diez was significantly involved up to that point, was carried out by Horst Steinmann and his Nuremberg chair for corporate management as well as by Herbert Kubicek , who was also the head of the accompanying scientific project in the Humanization of Working Life program . In addition, from 1974 Diez developed forms of assessment centers for employee selection in Nuremberg, the aim of which was to offer applicants a selection process that was as stress-free and transparent as possible.

The basis for these initiatives and for the management of complex projects was the Interdisciplinary Project Management / Interdivisionary Project Management (IPM) founded by Diez in 1982 . Since then it has acted as a network and integrates experts from the areas necessary for the respective project with the aim of finding solutions for political and economic decision-makers with the participation of those affected. Together with IPM, Diez developed models for securing jobs in unstable sectors and regions. These included employment companies and employment plans, for example .

In 1982/1983, IPM designed an employment plan for Olympia Leer in its first major project. This consisted of a business plan for the continuation of production, a qualification plan that bundled all funding options of the Employment Promotion Act and a regional innovation center. This concept became the template for the following employment companies and employment plans in Germany. In 1983 Diez and Michael Grauvogel , who later became Vice President of the Bremen Chamber of Employees , published a guidebook for workforces , and the next year also with Grauvogel: Founding a workforce association . Such workforce associations should serve to strengthen the workforce by involving families and the local environment as well as colleagues outside the company.

The Hattingen model for the continuation of operations of the Mönninghoff smithy in Hattingen , on which Helmut Diez worked, proved in 1984 that jobs could be saved even in difficult industries with little public funding. This involved 791 jobs, the destruction of which a "planning group around Wolfgang Diez" tried to prevent with new concepts, including the establishment of a foundation. The concept also included a continuation company and a vocational support organization . “So a group of“ alternative workforce consultants ”around the former Foto-Phorst managing director Wolfgang Diez was brought in. ... Diez succeeded in working with the banks to sound out a model for financing the continuation company. ”However, Dresdner Bank's refusal to sell its collateral to the rescue company prevented continuation. Despite the failure, Ulrich Schmidt , member of the state parliament of the SPD, commented in the Westfälische Rundschau : "... the Diez model of involving everyone was already right." On May 9, Helmut Diez gave a final speech to the employees. On April 17th, he was still working with IPM, for which Hans-G. Draheim, Alfred Frosch and his father were part of a 43-page planning concept for Hattinger Schmiede- und Preßwerk GmbH as a company takeover company for the Mönninghoff GmbH iK operation , which was thus obsolete.

Diez continued to work as a consultant, for example at Grundig in Fürth . He is the author of the Grundig Employment Plan , which the group management approved in March 1985. This plan was the first employment plan implemented in the Federal Republic of Germany.

As a result, IPM created employment-securing alternatives to operational restrictions and layoffs. This included the conversion projects for shipyards and military electronics manufacturers (e.g. at Bremer Vulkan , Blohm + Voss , AG Weser , Krupp Atlas Elektronik or Voith ), but also for the Valeo- Neimann automotive supplier plant in Haan , which was threatened with closure in 1989 , where 429 Jobs should be secured. After 1990 Diez developed in the new federal states a. a. the development of continuation models and management buyouts for Robotron and Electronicon .

In addition to promoting and advising companies in all phases of life - Diez looked after more than 50 start-ups - he was involved in several IPOs and assumed managerial responsibility for the growth phases as well as for restructuring. In 1987 he published a contribution to the Kooperativ-Service-GmbH on the question of the financing models of self-administered companies , which deals with the "integrated consulting and financing model". Part of this concept is the IPM planning model , which is intended to enable planning “from the bottom up”. For the German Federation of Trade Unions he created studies and brochures, such as qualifying in employment companies .

He paid particular attention to the innovation potential of crisis companies - for example at the private brewery Peter KG, Ostheim vor der Rhön , from which, after the restructuring he and his IPM team were responsible for, the " Bionade " emerged, for which he founded the first marketing companies - and developed distribution models: "The Bremen entrepreneur Helmut Diez recognized the potential and brought Bionade onto the market". At the end of 1994, Diez had drafted the continuation and restructuring concept for the private brewery Peter KG, Ostheim .

Technologies

Together with local supporters and initiatives, Diez developed the first functioning wind power plant production in Germany from the Bremen branch of the plant manufacturer Voith . By using initially Danish licenses, AN Windenergie GmbH was made marketable for the lower to medium output range. AN Windenergie GmbH has been integrated into Siemens Windenergie since November 2005 . However, Diez soon became a critic of the use of wind power, as storage technologies were lacking and environmental protection aspects, medical hazards and the base load problem were barely taken into account.

In the transport sector, Diez was with IPM 1987 appraiser and planner of the VSF Fahrradmanufaktur Bremen (1987) with the most innovative bicycles at the time and a sales model that was awarded the Bremer Landesbank innovation prize in 1990 .

As head of the Bremerhaven design laboratory , Diez co-developed the Weserbus (1992–1994), which was to be manufactured with a consortium of leading companies in this sector such as Abeking & Rasmussen , Systemtechnik Nord and Schreiber Reederei and integrated into local public transport as a fast ferry . Together with the shipbuilding engineer Volker Behr and in cooperation with various universities and the prospective system designers as part of their postgraduate training, the transport system was developed, which was designed with five large catamarans for 80 passengers each, in order to connect Vegesack with Bremen city center within 30 minutes . This included the ship design, including ship technology, tide-dependent mooring systems, the route systems with synchronization in the local public transport and also included the marketing concept. "The threads always came together in the design laboratory, where the specifications for individual components were defined and the system concept kept in mind."

The Dolphin Space Team - Helmut Diez, Itay Peter Behr, Bianca Hoffmann and Michael Scheer  - also acted as a think tank for “nomadic technologies”.

Science and education area

Diez was the founder, director and employee or member of various scientific institutions and programs - such as the ESPRIT II program in the home electronics sector , the Institute for Work and Technology (IFAT) in Hamburg - there he published a 110-page study under the Title Socially compatible technology design in the field of lifting and carrying heavy loads . The background to this was that in 1980 around 40% of the labor force regularly had to carry loads of more than 20 kg, 17% even frequently. To protect their health, handling systems should be developed on behalf of the responsible ministry in North Rhine-Westphalia.

As head of the Bremerhaven design laboratory , he was responsible for regional business development in the design sector from June 1992, as well as postgraduate training for architects and industrial designers. With these he carried out various pre-competitive projects. He is the author of the scholarship model, which has long shaped the work of the design laboratory. After his departure, this was implemented by François Burkhard and other designers and design critics, for which Burkhard was recognized by the Bremen Senate after a decade . Burkhard had previously been the head of the design center at the Center Pompidou and was an advisory board member on Diez's management committee. The focus was, for example, on experimental yacht design, but also on the design of authorities or acoustic pollution, as well as "assistance with design problems, the development or modification of products". The design laboratory also acted as the “point of contact for the award of design funding” in the amount of up to 40,000 D-Marks.

Diez, 2005 was also co-founder of TD-win , the Turkish-German Business Institute at the University of Bremen  - University of Applied Sciences .

Top sport programs, therapy, coaching

Diez with the world cup team he trained in snowboard cross

Diez is also a co-developer of the Dolphin Space Program , which offers intervention therapies for comatose , severely disabled and behavioral children and their parents.

For top-class sport, the elements of water treatment and mental coaching were combined with build-up and muscle training and elements from high-performance pilates . The “Sports Efficiency Program” from Diez was u. a. Implemented in 2011 with the Austrian World Cup team in snowboard cross (SBX). The Dolphin Space program was also used here.

Art, culture and media

The "contract of fiction" between Jean-Michel Basquiat and Diez, to the two in Hana on the June 25, 1988 Maui , Hawaii joined

In the field of art and culture, Diez first emerged with staged performances with Peter Abromeit and Gustav Gisiger , for which she won the Villa Ichon Culture and Peace Prize in 1983 for the action theater “Erst.” With around 120 musicians and actors and the “Peace Initiative Ostertor” Graves create home ”received. In 1983, together with the Association of German Writers, a “funeral march for the burned literature” followed on the day of the book burning, which the local press announced: “Next Tuesday, the city center will be dominated by this action, which was carried out by the three Bremen artists Helmut Diez, Peter Abromeit and Gustav Gisiger has been prepared. "

He played with crossover musicians in various ensembles. He also produced complex cross-over compositions. These include u. a. Freeport - L'affaire Flibustier , recorded in June 1987 or Pulse (1992/93) with Michael Sievert, which he published with his label "Dizzy Essentials". In addition to Michael Sievert, u. a. with Sainkho Namtchylak , Wolfram Dix, Heinz Becker , Jens Ahlers, Michael Berger, Klaus Koch and Carolyne Mas . With Michael Sievert he calculated u. a. all interval series of 12-tone music and worked on the fundamentals of sound design . In this context, he speaks out against “acoustic pollution”.

Photography by Helmut Diez

With Jean-Michel Basquiat , who was disappointed by gallery owners, Diez developed a concept for an Association of Painters from June 1988 until his death in August 1988 , the subject of which was the sponsorship of young artists by world-famous ones.

Exhibition "In the Swim", Bremerhaven 1993

In the exhibition In the Swim designed by him , he presented from May 2nd to June 30th, then extended until August 25, 1993 with Karen-Beate Phillips ( British European Design Group ) and Liz Farrelly (Blueprint) the "largest ( n) A retrospective of British furniture makers who have ever taken place on the European continent, ”as Spiegel said. Blueprint stated: "The installation .. was realized by Designlabor's managing director Helmut Diez". "57 designers ... Helmut Diez, head of the design laboratory, was able to bring to Bremerhaven", whereby the lighting design was co-developed by Durham Marenghi , said Production Partner . A total of 150 objects were exhibited, 56 other designers took part in addition to Tom Dixon , Blueprint reported euphorically that the German media were “entranced”, Wohn Design reported that the exhibition had caused a “national and international sensation”. The next stops of the exhibition were Cologne, Stockholm, Milan and London.

For the largest art garden in Europe, "future workshop and think tank" Mariposa by Helga and Hans-Jürgen Müller on Tenerife , he developed the program planning including a philosophically influenced television format and the profitability calculation for the transfer to a state foundation.

Expert opinion for Medienkultur Bremen GmbH, 1991

In addition to providing ongoing advice to the Hamburg film office under the leadership of Dieter Kosslick at the time , Diez designed various media institutions. In connection with the award of the first full program licenses, he developed the so-called media workshops NW for film and video with the Medienzentrum Ruhr . These were designed as a qualification for media makers with the aim of media citizen participation (open channels, etc.). For Bremen he wrote the expert opinion on all economic and legal aspects of the Kommunalkinos 46 and the Bremedia Association.

As part of Europe Week , in 2000 he designed the first media and Europe-wide school exchange.

Urban development, architecture, sustainability

From 2003 to 2007 Diez developed the overall planning for the ancient and medieval part of the Golden Horn (Haliç) in Istanbul . The planning area covers around 500,000 m² and thus intervenes deeply in the urban and social structure. Starting in 2012, it will create the necessary planning conditions to enable extensive and transparent participation by the Istanbul population, local patrons and experts. The aim is to achieve a reconstruction of the Golden Horn that does justice to the public and the cultural demands of Istanbul.

A public space with cultural facilities is to be created between the Galata Bridge and the Rahmi M. Koç Museum. The seven parks planned by Diez include a gated community , which is to provide funding for the otherwise public areas, a botanical garden, a living museum , a design center, an early Ottoman library, several private collections of Ottoman and modern art, one on sports medicine and - Therapy-specialized university, college and clinic, a historical theme park, a convention center with musical, opera, philharmonic orchestra and a water-bound outdoor play area; several contemporary museums, as well as a small-scale residential and business district. Diez wants to meet the urban sustainability criteria here and erect energy-plus buildings . The IPM planning team includes Istanbul architects and creative artists Christian Derix, Matthias Fuchs, Tobias Wallisser and Arnold Walz.

On the occasion of the opening of the Formula 1 racetrack in Istanbul in 2005, Diez founded SMI Sport Marketing Istanbul . These activities are intended to support the cultural ambitions of the Haliç project.

In 2011, Insa Otteken opened tree house suites under the name Resort Baumgeflüster near Bad Zwischenahn , with Helmut Diez responsible for the interior design . In 2014, Departures magazine ranked the resort eighth among the “World's Top Tree-House Hotels”.
