Carl Magnusson

Carl Magnusson (born March 8, 1940 in Malmö ) is a Swedish industrial designer, inventor and lecturer.

Life

Carl Gustav Magnusson was born in Malmö, but grew up in Toronto and Vancouver . He studied architecture and design at the University of Idaho and Chalmers Technical University in Gothenburg, Sweden . In 1966 he worked for Charles and Ray Eames in California, but soon went self-employed in Rudolph Michael Schindler's studio in West Hollywood .

In 1976 he started at Knoll International as Director of Graphics and Showroom Design and soon rose to become Director of Design for Europe. He designed so-called “showrooms” for Knoll in London , Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart , in Zurich , in Florence , Turin and Rome , as well as in Amsterdam . In 1993 he became Senior Vice President, Director of Design Worldwide and finally Executive Vice President, Director of Design in 2003 . He was a co-founder of the Knoll Museum in East Greenville, Pennsylvania , which has one of the most comprehensive collections of furniture manufacturing.

Magnusson designed works for Knoll, Teknion , Stegner Engineering , Arexit and, together with his wife Emanuela Frattini Magnusson, the MoMA Design Store. In 2005 he founded CGM Design (also Carl Gustav Magnusson Design ), which advises manufacturers of furniture and automobiles on product development and design strategy issues. Magnusson taught design, for example at BMW , at the American Institute of Architects or at Waterworks .

In 2012 Magnusson received the Contract Magazine Legend Award and in the same year the Chicago Atheneum Good Design Award and numerous other awards.
