Tom Dugan
Thomas J. "Tom" Dugan (born January 1, 1889 in Dublin , † March 7, 1955 in Redlands , California ) was an Irish - American actor.
life and career
Tom Dugan was born in Ireland, but moved with his family to Philadelphia as a child . He began his acting career at medical shows and on vaudeville stages, where he formed a comedian duo for several years with an actress friend . From 1927 Dugan worked regularly in the film business, which he remained loyal to until his death, making a total of around 270 film appearances. The actor - looking "like he's lost too many fistfights and won too many drinking games" - played mostly comedic ruffians who didn't always seem trustworthy. He often embodied "police officers, gangsters, baseball coaches, taxi drivers or sarcastic prison inmates" in smaller supporting roles. In the mid-1930s he worked briefly as a screenwriter and gagwriter for the Hal Roach film studios, but then devoted himself entirely to acting.
Probably his best-known film appearance was Tom Dugan as Hitler actor Bronski in Ernst Lubitsch's film classic Sein oder nicht sein from 1942. In the same year he played Adolf Hitler again in the musical film Star Spangled Rhythm . In the year he died, Tom Dugan played a bartender in the crime drama Street of Terror alongside William Bendix . On March 7, 1955, the 66-year-old actor died in a traffic accident in Redlands, California . He left his wife Marie Raymond (1902–1971), with whom he had been married since 1925.
