Tom Fischer

Thomas "Tom" Fischer (* in Chicago ) is an American clarinetist and saxophonist of Dixieland and traditional jazz in New Orleans .

Fischer grew up in Chicago, studied classical clarinet at Indiana University with Bernard Portnoy and entered the jazz scene in New Orleans in 1989 as part of the band of Banu Gibson . He performs regularly in New Orleans (including at Preservation Hall, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, French Quarter Festival) and toured regularly in Europe, Asia and Australia, including Japan regularly from 1998. In 1992 he took part in a State Department Tour with Eddie Bayard (New Orleans Classic Jazz Orchestra) in India, Pakistan and the Middle East. He performed with Lucien Barbarin , Jack Maheu , Duke Heitger (Steamboat Stompers), Lars Edegran , Ernie Carson , Kermit Ruffins , the singer Daryl Sherman , Don Vappie , Fritzel's Jazz Band (named after Fritzel's European Jazz Pub on Bourbon Street, where he also plays regularly) and Tim Laughlin . He toured Germany with Laughlin from the 1990s onwards.

He teaches jazz clarinet at the University of New Orleans. Fischer also plays the saxophone and, following Tom Lord , took part in 61 recording sessions from 1986 to 2010.
