Tom Morahan

Tom Morahan (born June 9, 1906 as Thomas Hugo Morahan in London , United Kingdom , † September 10, 1969 in London-Kensington ) was a British film architect and producer .

Life

Thomas Hugo Morahan became interested in painting at the age of seven . At 16 he attended the Royal College of Arts, at 17 he went to the London Academy of Painting. He then worked in an architecture office. As a film assistant since 1932, Morahan soon specialized in painting and sculpture .

In 1936 he switched to the production company Alexander Kordas as a draftsman and was involved in his Rembrandt filming that same year . The following year he created his first building designs as chief architect. Before the outbreak of World War II, Morahan had designed some first-class decorations for equipment-intensive productions by Erich Pommers production company Mayflower, with Charles Laughton as the leading actor ( Vessel of Wrath, St. Martin's Lane, Reef Pirates ). Even after the war, Tom Morahan was involved in a number of high-class films. On the other hand, the collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock ( The Paradin Case , Slave of the Heart ), for whom he had prepared the smuggling story Riff Piraten ten years earlier, was rather disappointing at the end of the 1940s .

Morahan proved his qualities when he had to design buildings for historical fabrics or pretentious costume and adventure films ( Treasure Island , The King's Admiral , Boccaccio's great love ). On some of his later works ( You were 13, You Whistled And The Guys Cuddled, China Story, The Daring Men In Their Flying Chests ) he worked with his older brother, the film architect Jim Morahan . Tom Morahan, who received an Oscar nomination for his work on Sons and Lovers , has occasionally dabbled as a producer.
