Günther Treptow (singer)
Günther Treptow (born October 22, 1907 in Berlin ; † March 28, 1981 in Berlin) was a German opera singer ( tenor ) who is best known for his roles in operas by Richard Wagner .
Life
Günther Treptow began his vocal training at the University of Music and continued it in Milan with Giovanni Scarmeo. Treptow had been a member of the SA and the NSDAP since 1926 ( membership number 38 579). When Jewish ancestors were found in his mother's family tree in 1934, he was banned from performing. On June 6, 1935 he received a special permit from Joseph Goebbels and was able to continue his career.
Treptow made his stage debut in 1936 in Berlin in Der Rosenkavalier . In 1938 he sang Florestan in Fidelio at the Vienna Volksoper . In 1939 he sang the leading role in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Sopot Festival . In 1940 he had his first appearance in the Bavarian State Opera .
After the war he sang in Fidelio in Berlin in 1945 and had his first appearance in the Vienna State Opera in 1947 and in 1951 the first appearance at the Bayreuth Festival .
Treptow quickly established himself as one of the leading hero tenors of his time, v. a. as Siegmund in Die Walküre , Siegfried in the opera of the same name and Götterdämmerung and as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde . In addition to Wagner roles, he also sang Max im Freischütz , Števa Buryja in Jenůfa , Canio in Pagliacci and in Otello the leading role.
On the international stage he had guest appearances at La Scala in Milan , La Monnaie in Brussels , the Royal Opera House in London, the New York Metropolitan Opera and also in Leningrad and Moscow .
From 1955 he sang at the Berlin State Opera . He sang at the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1961 to 1972 when he left the stage.
