Thomas Ernest "Satch" Sanders (born November 8, 1938 in New York City ) is a former basketball player and coach for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 1.98 m tall Sanders won eight NBA championships with the Celtics between 1960 and 1969. He was Vice President of the NBA until 2007.

Player career

Sanders was in 1960 by Celtics coach Red Auerbach drafted . Although "Satch" scored less than 10 points per game in his career, his defensive strength made him one of the most feared forwards of the 1960s. Sanders, together with Bill Russell ( center ), KC Jones ( point guard ) and his young substitute John Havlicek, formed the core of the NBA's best defense. If the Celtics played against teams with dominant forwards (e.g. the Los Angeles Lakers with Elgin Baylor or the New York Knicks with Dave DeBusschere ), it was Sanders who regularly made life difficult for them.

From 1960 to 1969, Sanders won eight of nine NBA titles with the Celtics. After Russell retired in 1969, the Celtics sank into mediocrity, but when Sanders resigned in 1973, the Celtics honored him by withdrawing his number 16 Celtics jersey forever.

Trainer and functionary career

Sanders coached the Celtics twice as interim coach in 1978 and 1979. He was Vice President of the NBA until 2007 and headed the association's anti-drug program.

In 2011, Sanders was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
