Tom Steele

Thomas Steele (born November 15, 1905 , † May 28, 1979 ) was a Scottish politician. Steele Crescent street in the village of Balloch is named after him.

Political career

In the general election in 1945 , Steele ran for the Labor Party for the mandate of the Lanark constituency . On election day, he prevailed against the future Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home , who had represented the constituency since 1931, and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the following elections in 1950 Steele lost narrowly to Douglas Home and left the House of Commons.

Although already in poor health, Steele's party colleague Adam McKinlay won the lower house mandate of the constituency of West Dunbartonshire in the general election in 1950 . McKinlay died less than a month later, necessitating by-elections in the constituency. Steele joined these against the unionist R.A. Allan on. He narrowly prevailed against Allan and won again a seat in the British House of Commons. In the following general election in 1951 , 1955 , 1959 , 1964 and 1966 , Steele held the constituency's mandate. Before the general election in 1970 , Steele announced his retirement from active politics. His party colleague Ian Campbell stood for the Labor Party and won the mandate.
