Gilbert Thomas Webster (born July 17, 1886 in Bilston , Staffordshire , England , † June 21, 1962 in Highgate, Middlesex ) was a British cartoonist and cartoonist .

life and career

Born in the West Midlands , the Englishman mainly specialized in sports cartoons. Webster usually worked in a railway company office and learned to draw by himself. In 1904 he won a cartoon drawing competition for an English newspaper. That was the beginning of his career. His first job was the Birmingham Sports Argus, then the Evening News and then the Daily Mail. He specialized in equestrian , cricket, and golf cartoons . Webster worked for the Daily Mail for 20 years. The Englishman also drew important political figures . His success went so far that in an election in 1929 his drawings were exhibited in Trafalgar Square . In 1940 he ended his relationship of trust with the Daily Mail and from then on worked as a freelancer for various English newspapers until 1960. Tom Webster died in 1962 at the age of 76.
