Tommy Mitchell (musician)
Thomas "Tommy" Mitchell (* 1926 in Columbia (Pennsylvania) ; † May 30, 2003 ) was an American bass trombonist .
Mitchell began his musical career in the mid-1940s in the bands of Sam Donahue , Tex Beneke , Ray McKinley and the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra . He then lived in New Jersey and was a member of the studio band of the Sid Caesar Show ; he also played in the ABC studios on shows such as the Voice of Firestone, Jimmy Dean Show and the Dick Cavett Show . From the 1950s to the late 1980s he worked a. a. as a member of the Gil Evans Orchestra with Miles Davis ( Miles Ahead , 1957), also with Dizzy Gillespie , Stan Getz , Cannonball Adderley , Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey , Coleman Hawkins ( The Hawk in HiFi ) and Jimmy Smith . He also accompanied the vocalists Frank Sinatra , Tony Bennett , Barbra Streisand , Peggy Lee , Ella Fitzgerald , Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday . He can also be heard on the two trombone albums Twenty-one Trombones by Urbie Green and on Jay and Kai + 6 by JJ Johnson and Kai Winding .
