Ton Caanen (born March 18, 1966 in Geleen , Limburg Province ) is a Dutch football coach . In the 2011/12 season he is the coach of the Cypriot first division club AEK Larnaka .

Career

As a player

Caanen began as a footballer in the youth of Quick'08 in his hometown Geleen, with whom he was promoted to the second amateur league in his first senior season. He then played for VV Sittard and FC Geleen-Zuid in the Hoofd class and let his career end with VV Heidebloem in Geleen. While the left-footed player could be found on the left wing in the storm at the beginning of his career , he slipped further and further back over the years: first in midfield and later he was found on the left defensive side . He was never active for a club in paid football: "As a football player, I wasn't good enough to make it as a professional."

As a trainer

Caanen began his coaching career as a youth coach at FC Geleen-Zuid. In the two years there, he led the A-youth twice in a row to the championship, brought them to the third highest national league. Then he took over the first team of the club, with whom he initially relegated, but managed to get promoted again the next year.

He accepted an offer from Roda JC , where he was responsible for youth training from 2001 and coached the second team Jong Roda JC the following year . In 2003, the Ukrainian club Metalurg Donetsk signed him as head coach. With Metalurg he reached a UEFA starting place in the Premjer-Liha .

In 2005 Caanen went to Israel . He was initially the coach of Beitar Jerusalem , but a few weeks later he said goodbye when Luis Fernández - who had come to the club as director shortly after Caanen - urged him out of coaching. Only a week later he signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv , where he succeeded the recently dismissed Nir Klinger . In July 2006 Caanen moved again for one season in the Ukrainian first division to Stal Alchevsk . In the 2009/10 season he was coach at Valletta FC in Malta , where he worked with Jordi Cruijff as a player and assistant coach. Valletta won the Maltese cup competition with them . The following season, both moved to AEK Larnaka in Cyprus, Caanen as head coach and Cruijff as technical director. They led the newcomer to the UEFA Europa League in their first season with players like Dutch former international Kevin Hofland and Gregoor van Dijk . For the 2011/12 season, former international Tim de Cler also joined the team.
