action

The children Mu Shun and Ling Ju are kidnapped by armed riders to a dark place where they are trained to be fighters. Only when you have killed the most powerful person in the world, Cao Cao, the chancellor of Emperor Xian, will all battles be fought and peace reign. The two grow up. Ling Ju grows up to be a beautiful young woman.

Ling Ju is taken to Cao Cao's court. Mu Shun becomes a servant at the emperor's court. The emperor is at Cao Cao's court. Cao Pi the son of Cao Cao has an affair with the emperor's wife. Cao Cao returned to his court in AD 220 after defeating General Guan Yu. On this occasion, Ling Ju Cao Cao is brought as a mistress. While she waits outside for Cao Cao with the other members of the court for the ceremonial greeting of Cao Cao, she sees Mu Shun in the emperor's court.

In the evenings she secretly meets with Mu Shun. They talk about something bad will happen when the stars fall to earth and when there are four stars in a row. Meanwhile, Cao Cao remembers the prophecy of his court astrologer ten years ago. The court astrologer said that in ten years there would be four stars in a row. This is the sign that an imperial dynasty is being replaced by a new dynasty. Cao Cao would conform to Heaven's will if he took the throne beforehand. Cao Cao's son Cao Pi also asked Cao Cao to ascend the throne. Cao Cao then stabs the court astrologer to death because he has called for the emperor to be overthrown.

Back in AD 220, Cao Cao is seated in a room where various weapons are on display. Ling Ju is added. Cao Cao tells her that the weapons of Cao Cao's enemies are on display in this sword memorial. He often comes here to have a silent conversation with his enemies. Ling Ju asks why he is taking on all these fights. He only answers her when all enemies have been defeated, and peace could reign. Ling Ju realizes that Cao Cao's goals are no different from the wishes of her and Mu Shun. Ling Ju wears a pendant on a chain around his neck. Cao Cao asks about the trailer. Ling Ju says she got this pendant from her mother.

In his own palace, Emperor Xian speaks with his advisors about the prophecy that the dynasties would change if four stars were in a row. Since his chancellor Cao Cao is the most powerful man in the empire and therefore represents the greatest threat to his rule, he issues the order to kill Cao Cao. He writes the order in his own blood on a silk scarf.

Later, the emperor's soldiers attempt to kill Cao Cao in his sleep at night. That same night, Ling Ju takes a sword from the sword memorial and sneaks up to Cao Cao to kill him. She comes into the bedroom just as he is fending off an attack by several soldiers. Cao Cao tells them to take cover behind his back from the attackers. Ling Ju missed this opportunity to carry out her mission. Cao Cao can fend off the attack. After the attack, he tells Ling Ju to bring the sword back. Cao Cao's soldiers find the emperor's orders with the dead attackers.

The next day, Cao Cao forced an audience with Emperor Xian. He makes the emperor understand that he knows that the attack was ordered by him. Thereupon the empress and her father confess to have planned the assassination attempt to protect the emperor from the revenge of Cao Cao. The empress will be killed immediately. A little later, her father was cruelly executed.

Ling Ju and her servants watch the execution of the empress's father. She asks her servants why the people cheered the execution. The servants tell her that under the rule of Chancellor Cao Cao everyone would have a roof over their heads and enough to eat. Therefore, the people would hate whoever tried to overthrow Cao Cao. Until then, Ling Ju assumed that she would do the will of the people by killing Cao Cao. Now she realizes that this is not the case.

The next time she meets Mu Shun, she suggests that he flee. Mu Shun says there is no place to go.

Cao Pi visits his father Cao Cao. He comes towards him and says that he wants to ask him a few questions. Cao Cao accuses Cao Pi through his relationship with the empress of having known about the assassination order on him and of having intervened too late. Cao Cao has Cao Pi's entourage killed, but leaves Cao Pi alive.

On a full moon night in an unknown location, other men are planning an assassination attempt on Cao Cao. Again they refer to the prophecy. Cao Cao hears that soldiers are gathering in front of the city and gets the emperor to come to Cao Cao's palace in order to dissuade the imperial troops from attacking his palace.

The emperor comes to Cao Cao. They go hunting together. After the hunt, Cao Cao leads Ling Ju to his grave. There he speaks to the blind builder of the tomb. He hears Ling Ju laughing and says that the laugh reminds him of another beautiful woman, namely Diaochan, the wife of Lü Bu. Lü Bu is one of Cao Cao's enemies whom he killed.

Ling Ju gets sick. Cao Cao cares for them. Cao Cao has a garden laid out for them where deer are kept. After recovering from her illness, she takes a look at the garden. Ji Ping, Cao Cao's personal doctor, joins them. He professes to stand on the side of the Han Emperor Xian.

Shortly afterwards, Ji Ping is seen at the place of the oracle. He gives a speech to those who were trained to be fighters in the camp. He says it's time to reveal a secret. Cao Cao is the enemy who killed her parents.

A banquet is held at the Palace of Cao Cao, the Palace of the Bronze Sparrow. The emperor is a guest. Ling Ju dances for the guests. Cao Cao remembers Diao Chan. The unknown men who are planning to assassinate Cao Cao ride ahead and reach the city where Cao Cao's palace stands. Many small lanterns float in the sky. As these sink down, they cause fire. So the city catches fire.

That night, Mu Shun tried to kill Cao Cao. However, when he tries to stab Cao Cao in his bed, it turns out that a soldier was lying in Cao Cao's bed that night. This fends off Mu Shun. Cao Cao's soldiers and Cao Cao join them immediately. Cao Cao sends the soldiers away and fights in a hand-to-hand duel with Mu Shun.

The attackers pretend to want to fight the fire and therefore have to go into town. The city gates are opened to them. They storm the city and shout: "Kill the traitor Cao Cao and save the Han Dynasty." Ling Ju also wants to kill Cao Cao that night, and pursues a rider whom she believes is Cao Cao with a lance. She manages to hurt him.

The viewer learns that after their duel, Mu Shun and Cao Cao agreed that Mu Shun would flee the city in Cao Cao's armor in order to mislead Cao Cao's attackers. In return, Cao Cao promises to release Ling Ju. So Ling Ju injured Mu Shun, not Cao Cao. Both flee the city together. Mu Shun dies in Ling Ju's arms.

The battle for Cao Cao's palace continues. It turns out that personal physician Cao Caos Ji Ping is leading the attackers. Emperor Xian also takes part in the battle. The attackers shout that Cao Cao is dead. Cao Pi should surrender. Cao Pi replies that Cao Cao couldn't possibly be dead. The staircase of the palace divides into two parts. Cao Cao rode out with new soldiers. His soldiers take heart. Ji Ping stabs his sword in the stomach and dies.

The emperor flees to the palace. Cao Cao comes there and speaks to the emperor. Cao Cao had the Palace of the Bronze Sparrow built to prepare for that day, the day when four stars are in a row. In anticipation of this day, the emperor also summoned the children of Cao Cao's murdered enemies. Cao Cao wanted to support the emperor's rule so that there could be peace in the country. Cao Cao can no longer do that.

Cao Cao rides out to find Ling Ju. He finds her. She leads a horse by the hand on which the dead Mu Shun is lying. He assures her that he will keep the promise made to Mu Shun. He knew for a long time from the pendant on her neck that she was Diao Chan's daughter. She had many opportunities to kill him. She asks why he put her up next to him anyway. Cao Cao asks Ling Ju to return with him. Ling Ju mounts his horse to Mu Shun and throws himself into a deep ravine. Cao Cao stays behind.

Cao Cao died in AD 220. Eight months later, his son Cao Pi forced Emperor Xian to abdicate. Cao Pi became the second emperor of Wei. He made Cao Cao the first emperor of Wei. That was the year 25 in the Jian'an period. The year in which the four stars were lined up.
