The Tooma River is a river in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales .

It rises on the southwest slopes of Mount Jagungal in the Snowy Mountains and drains part of the western Kosciuszko National Park . It first flows a few kilometers to the west, then turns its course to the north and later again to the west. It flows into the Murray River south of the small town of Welaregang .

The Tooma is about 50 kilometers long, but the water level fluctuates strongly with the seasons because it carries away the water from the snowmelt.

The Tooma Reservoir , part of the Snowy Mountains System , collects water from the upper reaches of the river and discharges it to the Tumut Pondage on the Tumut River , where it is used to generate electricity at the Tumut River's power stations.

This discharge ensures that the water is transferred from the catchment area of the Murray River to that of the Murrumbidgee River , into which the Tumut River flows. But there are countertransference in other parts of the Snowy Mountains system.
