Toomas Kall (born October 16, 1947 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer , playwright and humorist.
Life
Kall graduated from Tallinn in 1966 and studied journalism and Estonian philology at the University of Tartu from 1966 to 1972 . From 1971 to 1978 he was a correspondent for the Estonian cultural newspaper Sirp ja Vasar , for which he again worked from 1990 to 1994, then as its editor-in-chief. In the meantime he was employed as a literary director at a Tallinn theater, as well as briefly editor at the humorous magazine Pikker and head of department at Tallinnfilm. Kall also worked as a translator from Russian (including Ilja Grigorjewitsch Ehrenburg , Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Gogol and Dmitri Lwowitsch Bykow ) and has been living in Tallinn since 1994 as a freelancer.
Toomas Kall was a signatory to the Letter of Forty in 1980 and has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1984 .
plant
Kall started out as a cartoonist and published his first collection of literary parodies in 1982. Even here he proved to be a master of travesty , in which he can best be compared with Enn Vetemaa and Andrus Kivirähk . He has remained loyal to this genre up to the present day: to this day, Looming magazine has published a series entitled "How the Estonian writers" Kevade "would write" which he had already begun in his volume Elias' Drachen ", in which he describes the styles different authors on the most famous (children's) book in Estonian literature, the novel Kevade by Oskar Luts .
In his dramas he satirically ridiculed the bureaucratic absurdities of everyday Soviet life and later also wrote absurd plays. He also wrote scripts for films and television series. His entire work is dominated by a humorous view of the world, which was of great importance especially in the Soviet era: "With his work, he pleased his fellow citizens and made life a little easier for them."
