The Topper is in England designed by Ian Proctor, built since 1965 dinghy . The boat has a highly elastic, molded hull made of polypropylene and differs from most other boat classes, whose hulls are based on epoxy resin. It can be found worldwide with over 50,000 units as a youth, training, regatta and leisure dinghy . The topper can be occupied by a maximum of two adults, in regattas it is driven one-handed .
International competitions have been held since 1982. At the World Championships, boys and girls aged 13 and over competed together in the same class for the first time. For younger sailors there is also a world championship with a slightly smaller 4.2 m² sail. Another world championship will be held for sailors aged 21 and over.
The optionally available smaller sail can be attached without any further changes. It is recommended for children who weigh around 30–40 kg.
Due to its low weight, the topper can be transported on the car roof.
The majority of the boats sails in England, but there is also a fan base in Germany , mainly on the Breitenauer See and the Altmühlsee , also on the Lech barrage near Königsbrunn and in the British Möhnesee Sailing Club.
A slightly lighter version of the exact same design by Ian Proctor was made by Snapir Sailing Craft Ltd. from 1973. Made in Israel from glass fiber reinforced plastic under the name Snapir OD 11.
Class association
In November 1994 the Topper received the status of an international boat class from the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU) . The German class association was founded on December 7, 1998 and entered in the register of associations on December 23, 1998.
