The Breitenauer See (retention basin Breitenau) is a reservoir and bathing lake in the valley of the Sulm in the area of Obersulm and Löwenstein in the district of Heilbronn ( Baden-Württemberg ). After the devastating flood damage in the 1960s and 1970s, the Sulm Water Association, founded in 1973, built it between 1975 and 1980 to protect against floods, especially for Neckarsulm and its industrial areas. The lake was named after the nearby Breitenauer Hof and is constantly partially dammed.

Damming the Sulm created a reservoir with 2.3 million m³ of water and 40 hectares of water. During floods , the lake area increases to around 47 hectares. The lake is 1500 m long and between 200 and 500 m wide. The dam is 425 m long and 21 m high. The water depth at the dam is 16 m.

The Breitenauer lake is measured by the duration of storage space, the largest lake in the Stuttgart Region and is located on the northwestern edge of the nature park Swabian-Franconian Forest in protected landscape Upper Sulmtal. The Swabian Wine Route and the Swabian Poet Street lead past him. It not only serves as a flood retention basin , but is also surrounded by a local recreation area.

It was opened to the public in 1986 and includes water sports facilities for sailors and surfers , a campsite and an approx. 400 m long, demarcated bathing bay with approx. 10 hectares of lawn for sunbathing. Rowing, paddling, pedal boating and fishing are also possible. There are 60 km of marked hiking and cycling trails in the area. Every year 400,000 to 500,000 people visit the facilities maintained by the Breitenauer See local recreation association . The multi-award-winning Heilbronn campsite on the lake offers 400 sites of 100 m² each and 70 tent sites.

The lake is angling waters for the Breitenauer See fishing association , which also stocks it with fish. Their stock has a total weight of ten to twelve tons and they multiply independently to a small extent. All common local fish species are found, including carp , bream , crucian carp , perch , pikeperch , catfish and pike . The lake is also home to several suspected turtles . The Galician marsh crabs live here in great numbers; 2500 specimens of this type of crustacean were caught there in 2009. Also crayfish lived in Breitenauer lake, but fell at the latest 2013/2014 with the Red American crayfish entrained crayfish plague victim. As of 2016, according to estimates by the fisheries association, there are thousands of red American crayfish living in the lake, but no more crayfish.
