Tor Fretheim (born May 13, 1946 in Asker , Norway; † December 9, 2018 ) was a Norwegian writer , playwright, translator and longtime newspaper journalist.

Life

His parents ran a grocery store in Sandefjord and since 1953 in Oslo. After graduating in 1965, Fretheim began studying folklore at the University of Oslo . He graduated from the Journalisthøyskolen in Oslo from 1971–73 . He then worked from 1974 to 1986 for the major Oslo daily newspaper Aftenposten . From the 1970s he came out with small theater pieces, from 1982 he began to publish as a children's and youth writer, since 1986 full-time as a freelance writer.

Fretheim's books have been translated into Danish, Swedish and German. For his book Tanz in die Hölle he received the 1986 Critics' Prize , the most important Norwegian literary prize, in the category “Best Children's or Young People's Book” and in 1993 the Austrian Youth Literature Prize for its German translation. In 1996 he received the renowned Aschehoug Literature Prize .

Tor Fretheim lived and worked in Oslo . In 1997 he entered into a registered civil partnership with the actor Knut Thomassen Vardtun.
