Torkel Baden (born July 27, 1765 in Frederiksborg , † February 9, 1849 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish philologist , archaeologist and art historian.

Life

Torkel Baden, the son of Professor Jacob Baden , studied at the University of Copenhagen and then went on extensive study trips through Germany and Italy. At the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen he studied from 1788 to 1791 with the classical scholar Christian Gottlob Heyne and in 1789 was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In 1793 he was appointed associate professor of philology in Copenhagen. As early as 1794, he moved to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel as an associate professor of philosophy and eloquence . In the same year, the Royal Society of Sciences in Göttingen elected him as a corresponding member. In 1804 Baden returned to Copenhagen, where he was secretary at the art academy until 1823 .

Torkel Baden was a pioneer in archeology in Denmark. He wrote Latin and Danish writings on Greek art history and in 1797 published Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn's letters on art . He also dealt with Nordic mythology and dealt critically with the philologist Finnur Magnússon .
