Toroni ( Greek Τορώνη ( f. Sg. ); Older name: Torone ) is a small village on the three kilometer long Toroneos Bay. It is located on the Sithonia peninsula in the municipality of the same name on the Chalkidiki peninsula , Greece . The small hamlet Tristinika belongs to the village of Toroni and is located north of the village center.
history
The name of the place comes from Greek mythology. Toroni was the wife of the sea demon Proteus and the mother of Poligonos and Tilegonos, who were defeated by Hercules .
In the 8th century BC Toroni was colonized by Chalkis and later joined the Attic League . 424 BC The place Sparta helped in the fight against Athens . The Athenians, holed up in a fortress on Cape Lykithos, were annihilated. In 348 BC Was Toroni by Philip II , 168 BC. After the dissolution of the Macedonian kingdom conquered by the Romans. The Christian basilica of Agios Athanassio fell victim to a fire in the 6th century AD. Only the mosaic of the central nave is still preserved.
The ancient port of Toroni has sunk below the surface of the sea and can only be visited by diving today.
