Tōru Ōsawa was born on December 27, 1962 in Kyoto Prefecture and studied art and animation at the Seika University of Kyoto . In 1985 he was hired by Nintendo and was assigned to Gunpei Yokoi's Research & Development 1 (R & D1) development department as a game designer, graphic artist and script writer.

After Ōsawa had designed graphics for games like Metroid in the first part of his Nintendo career , he asked in 1986 to be allowed to develop his own game. Since he was "neglected" in his own words, he initially developed the game completely on his own. In August 1986, a few Metroid contributors joined the project as it had to be completed by December. During this very stressful time for Osawa, he got married. In late 1986, Osawa's game was released as Kid Icarus for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

Together with R & D1 employees Yoshio Sakamoto and Makoto Kano , Ōsawa formed a group known as Team Shikamaru , who came up with the plot and scenarios of some of the R & D1 games. At that time, Ōsawa was the department's assistant manager. He worked on numerous games, some of which never appeared outside of Japan.

In 1995, Takao Shimizu from Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development appointed Ōsawa to be responsible for a new part of The Legend of Zelda series for the N64 . The game required a total development time of two and a half years and around 50 employees. As Script Director, Osawa was responsible for the plot, script and scenario. The project appeared in 1998 as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time , which is still considered the best video game of all time.

In 2000, several R & D1 employees left the department, including Ōsawa, who from then on worked in the Nintendo Network Service & Development department. Here Ōsawa was involved in a leading position in several lesser-known games. In 2004 he switched to the Nintendo Software Planning & Development (SPD) department, which is responsible for cooperation with external studios . As a manager and producer, he oversaw the development of several externally developed games.
