Yoshio Sakamoto (born July 23, 1959 ) is a Japanese game developer and member of the board of Nintendo , where he has been working since 1982. He was in charge of the development of various video games , including the Metroid series.

Life

Sakamoto is a key figure in the development of the Metroid series. Sakamoto grew up playing Nintendo games that he found imaginative. The company hired him in 1982 when he graduated from art college. His first projects included the design of pixel graphics for Donkey Kong on the portable Game & Watch system and Donkey Kong Jr. on arcade machines . He then turned to working on the Nintendo Entertainment System , where he designed the games Wrecking Crew , Balloon Fight and Gumshoe .

Sakamoto created characters for Metroid (under the pen name Shikamoto ) and was one of the game developers for Kid Icarus . He designed Super Metroid , Metroid Fusion , Metroid: Zero Mission , Metroid: Other M and was the producer of Metroid: Samus Returns . Examples of Sakamoto's work as a graphic designer can also be found in the Nintendo games Balloon Kid (1990), Game & Watch Gallery (1997), Wario Land 4 (2001), Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001) and WarioWare . He is considered one of the most prominent members of Nintendo's former development division, known as Nintendo Research & Development 1 .
