Nintendo Research & Development 1 ( Japanese 任天堂 開 発 第一 部 , Nintendō kaihatsu dai-ichi-bu , German "Nintendo Development Department 1", usually called Nintendo R & D1 for short ) was the oldest game development department of the Japanese video game company Nintendo . The studio was founded in the early 1970s and directed by Gunpei Yokoi . With Metroid , Ice Climber and Wario Land, R & D1 developed some of Nintendo's most important game series.

R & D1 established a close relationship with hardware developer Intelligent Systems and initially worked with them on a number of projects. In addition to video games, R & D1 developed the successful Game Boy , released in 1989 . For this console they developed the game Super Mario Land and invented the character Wario .

After Gunpei Yokoi's resignation in 1996, Takehiro Izushi led R&D1. In 2005, the department was closed as part of a group restructuring. Most of the employees were assigned to Nintendo Software Planning & Development .
